Summary:

This test method relates to the measurement of the oil absorption number of carbon black. The oil absorption number is a measure of the ability of carbon black to absorb liquids and is an indicator of processing and vulcanizate properties of specific rubber compounds that contain carbon black.

The method involves introducing oil to a sample of carbon black in a mixer chamber of an aborptometer. After absorbing the oil, the sample will become more viscous and will then be analyzed by a sensor in the absorptometer to measure the volume of oil per unit mass of the carbon black to determine the OAN.

At Smithers, we operate a Brabender Absorptometer type C. To access the full ASTM standard, visit their website.
