Smithers UN/ADR Dangerous Goods Testing and Revalidation services extended to Ireland

Published: 7/9/2024

Smithers has been appointed by National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) as an ADR Packaging and Intermediate Bulk Container (IBC) Test Laboratory.

This appointment by Ireland’s official standards body is for the Smithers Leatherhead, UK laboratory which already provides a range of accredited UN package and IBC testing services for UK approvals issued by the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA).

Smithers has been recognised in the UK by the VCA as an independent test laboratory authorised to test UN/ADR packaging for many years. The scope of the UKAS ISO 17025 accreditation covers design-type testing and revalidation of all UN package and IBC types*.

The additional appointment by NSAI allows Smithers to support clients in Ireland with UN/ADR Package, Intermediate Bulk Container (IBC) and Large Packaging testing for new certification and revalidation. This includes all associated design types as specified in UN (United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods) and ADR (European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road). It covers a wide range of packaging types including:
  • Bags, Boxes, Drums, Jerricans, Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs), Flexible Bulk Containers (FIBCs), Large Packagings, and Specialist Packs - for CLASS 6.2 CAT A infectious substances and CAT B biological substances.
Most design types of packaging used to carry dangerous goods must be tested to demonstrate that they meet minimum UN performance standards set by the regulations. The process is critical to ensure dangerous goods are safely contained during transport.

Smithers has been at the forefront of dangerous goods package testing since the earliest days of the UN requirements. We maintain an unrivalled knowledge of UN/ADR package testing and the requirements for Certification. As an independent laboratory, we are uniquely placed to offer detailed guidance to companies that are faced with the complexities of the Transport of Dangerous Goods Regulations
