Eric Pierce, Senior Engineer at the Smithers Winter Test Center, is presenting a webinar on global test methods for evaluating winter tire traction. The webinar, titled “
An Overview of Global Winter Tire Traction,” will take place on Tuesday, December 14, at 11:00 AM EST.
Pierce will deliver an overview of several common winter traction methods, including:
- ASTM F1805
- FMVSS F139
- CMVSS 139
- UNECE R117: C1, C2, and C3
- ISO 19447
The presentation will focus on regulatory changes stemming from the planned replacement of the 14” standard reference test tire (SRTT) with the 16”. It will also detail the finer points of each method, including how each has changed in recent years and how they compare to each other.
“The evaluation process for winter tire traction has evolved over the years, and standards differ between regions, countries, and regulatory bodies,” said Sean Connolly, General Manager, Smithers Winter Test Center. “Eric is a recognized expert on snow and ice traction testing. His perspective in this webinar will be incredibly valuable for tire manufacturers, distributors, and evaluators seeking to navigate the complex landscape of global testing requirements.”
There will be a brief Q&A session with Pierce after the main presentation.

Pierce is a Senior Project Engineer at the
Smithers Winter Test Center in Brimley, Michigan. He has an extensive background in
winter traction testing for passenger, light truck, and truck tires. Before joining Smithers in 2016, he was a lab manager at the Center for Tire Research at Virginia Tech. Pierce is a committee member and sub chairman for the ASTM International Technical Committee F09 on Tires, a Session Chair for Tire Society, and a member of the Industry Advisory Board for the Center for Tire Research. He earned his Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He also served in the US Navy, specializing in advanced electronics.
